Movie Thoughts

August Rush
WARNING - SPOILERS!

What an unrealistically fun movie. I overall loved it, and got goosebumps numerous times... but the whole idea of the movie is pretty much ridiculous. I don't care how gifted you are, you can't just go to an organ and be able to play like that, or grab a guitar and suddenly know the chords and technique. Your fingers aren't physically able to do things like that. You have to practice it, even if you can hear how you want it to be in your head. You also have to know more than, "The lines are E G B D F, and the spaces are F A C E" to write music. First of all, that's just for treble clef. Second of all, that doesn't cover rhythms at all. He was writing 16th notes. The only thing I can think of that would attempt to explain that would be if he grabbed a beginning piano book that had some beginning theory in it.

Anyhow, like I said before I really did like it. That first scene when he was playing with the guitar sounded awesome, and you could just see the utter glee of finally being able to play the music he had in his head this whole time. Basically it shows how much music rocks. Though, something that I could see happening from this movie is giving kids a false impression of music. "If I just listen, then I'll be able to play any instrument I want perfectly!" Umm... no. You have to practice for years to develop any kind of skill that good. They're going to go home, sit at their piano and try to play beautifully, and find out that they have no clue what they're doing. They'll determine they just aren't gifted musically and give up. Blech.

Another thing, how did Lyla and Louis fall in love with each other when they barely knew each other? Seriously, I know it's supposed to be "love at first sight" and all that nonsense, but they had a 6 sentence conversation. Then, BAM! A musical prodigy was made, which basically ruined both of their lives. Way to go. Then they seriously couldn't stop thinking about each other for all those years? Well, perhaps. I don't know. I would have loved it if the parents of this unbelievable kid actually developed a relationship and actually knew each other. Maybe even married. Wait... get married before having kids? That's such an old fashioned idea. Never mind... that's a completely different topic.

So Robin Williams was a "bad guy." It was so odd to see him be so mean! At first it was hard to believe, but since he's just that good of an actor, I was totally into it by the end. Though... Julliard? What the heck? He takes a semester of theory and all that good stuff, and suddenly he's able to write his own symphony. I don't even know why I'm going to college to study music. Why am I wasting my time with these theory courses and dictation? If I just listened to the music inside of me, I would know how it's supposed to go. Obviously. No. Every great composer studied Bach. Every. Single. One. In fact, they all studied every great composer. They all studied different styles, and the rules to follow in part writing, so they thoroughly understand the music they're writing and how to convey it. Evan/August just writes what he hears. It's different.

Though, remember, I still loved this movie. I loved it when Evan saw his Dad for the first time and they played guitar together. Seriously, that rocked. Some people might have thought it lasted too long, but I loved every moment. It was too bad they didn't realize at the time how they were related, but it still rocked my socks off. That, and I loved it when they mixed the cello playing with Louis' rock band. The cello really does rock.

So, basically this movie was unrealistic in terms of learning music, but rocked for showing how much music really does affect people and is in everything. So, I'd still recommend it. *thumbs up*
