Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
WARNING - SPOILERS!
The way this movie was done reminded me a lot of the Matrix sequels, like I suspected a while back. Pirates 2 and 3 are really the same movie just cut in half. So I have no complaints about the abrupt ending--it's not really the ending! I just have to wait about a year to find out the real ending. I really like how they set it all up though! There are so many things going on, it reminds me so much of Reloaded. I have to admit that I saw this movie twice to really understand everything that was going on. I have trouble understanding them when they talk sometimes, especially that one girl! She had some sort of Jamacan/Pirate accent. Oh my goodness! I had to concentrate so hard to understand what she was saying. And she happened to be explaining a vital part of the storyline. I think it makes the movie authentic and stuff, but I seriously think they should have made her speak a bit more like real english, especially when what she's saying is so important. Goodness.
I loved seeing Elizabeth in a pirates outfit. I thought she looked great! And it was genius what she did on that ship with her dress. That must have been fun for her. (the character, not the actress) Johnny Depp did fantastic again. He has some fantastic lines that are very quotable. His bit to Will (I think it was Will) about finding what he needed and finding the Dead Man's Chest to that one pirate (his name isn't really in my head), priceless. "You smell funny!" Ha! I just found that line to be hilarious the first time I heard it.
I did think it was disgusting to see Jack chew on a dead toenail with his toe/finger necklace. UGH! That was sooo gross! *shiver* There were just some things that made me turn my head. This was definitely more gruesome than the first one. And then those birds eating those guys alive, yuck! That would be a terrible way to die, being pecked away by birds. *shivers again*
I can't decide what Elizabeth's true feelings are. She certainly loves Will, I think. But she seems to have this thing for Jack that I don't quite get. She did completely make-out with him on the Black Pearl, but she was able to lock him on the ship that way. Did she secretly just want to kiss him and have some kind of an excuse? I don't know! And then on the island right before they find the Dead Man's Chest Jack's compass pointed to Jack when she had found the Chest. Is that what she wants most?? Nooo! Elizabeth! You have Will Turner! What does Jack have to offer? Bad hygiene and a sense of humor. I don't know what to believe. I just want to see the third one and see how things work out, especially with Will seeing her kissing Jack. Oohhh, they have it setup so nicely!
I thought that the designs for the people aboard the Flying Dutchman was great! Sometimes it was a bit grotesque, but it looked fantastic. The visual effects were flawless. For all I know there really are people out there that are made up of various sea creatures. I felt bad for Will having to be on board with those freaks. Goodness. I think I'd kill myself. It was cool to see father and son hookup, though. Bootstrap Bill really does look like a great guy. I like how they made him more human-like than the rest of the crew. Maybe to help symbolize that he holds onto his humanity by staying virtuous and stuff? Sure, why not?
One more thing. I really like the theme music for Pirates of the Caribbean, but it seems like they reused the exact same music for a lot of this movie as well. There was a bit of variation, but I expected more. I can think of 2 new melodies that they came up with, but most of it was the same. I can see trying to stay true to the old one, but not the same exact music. Goodness! Just add some variety. I know that I couldn't do it, but you're the composer. I still really liked the music, but just have a bit more originality.
All in all I just want to see the third movie so I can finally get all my questions answered!
