Movie Thoughts

The Devil Wears Prada
WARNING - SPOILERS!

I'm not sure what to think of this movie. (Heh, and these are supposed to be movie thoughts.) I mean, most movies are made to have something that makes you think or some kind of moral to them, but I can't figure this one out. Well, for starters I don't think that I'll ever understand the world of fashion. I thought that what she was wearing at first looked a lot better than what she wore when she was "stylish," but whatever. Ummm, what I saying?

Okay, so she has all this potential to be a great journalist so somehow she is forced to get a headstart in her career by either going to a fashion or auto magazine. I guess I missed something because with her great resume it seems like she wouldn't have to have experience to get a job at the New Yorker or whatever she wanted. But, I'll just ignore that since I might have missed something. She somehow manages a job at "Runway" magazine because Miranda wants to give the "smart fat girl" a chance since apparently the skinny stylish ones were all stupid. (I did like that line.) I can accept that. But this boss has some problems and is brutal to Andrea. So Andrea gets all upset because she's trying so hard but doesn't get anything in return. In fact, she was yelled at first trying really hard but failing. It actually reminded me a lot of AP US History and Homer Simpson's quote, "You tried your best and failed miserably. The lesson is 'never try.'" But what does she do? She decides to try really hard to do well and gets all these "fashionable" clothes which somehow give her some powers to do better than she did before. (I'm kidding, kind of) She pushes herself beyond and gets lucky in finding the manuscript to the next Harry Potter book for Miranda's kids. (Holy cravitz, I'd like to get my hands on that) So she works her way to the top and finds herself leaving all of her friends and making all these people feel bad. So she does something that makes the entire audience happy: she leaves! Yay! But then she is able to go back to her boyfriend with hardly any problems at all and her abandoning her friends and changing personalities pays off in the end so she can get her job at the New York paper.

So, what I'm wondering is, are the movie maker people trying to tell me that I should get a terrible job and abandon my friends, change my personality and attire for my boss, and be miserable for a while so I can get my dream job? I don't know. It just kind of ended when she got her job and you assume she lives happily ever after. She's all hunky dory and doesn't seem to have any scarring from the brutality of her last job. And Miranda doesn't seem to have changed that much at all. She might hire more "smart fat girls" in the future or something. Whoopee.

Something that really bothered me was Andrea's little flick with the hot blond. (I can't remember his name) She meets him and then a couple of days after suggesting that her and her longtime boyfriend "go on a break" decides to go and have sex with this strange dude. Have sex! I could understand maybe kissing him and then realizing that it was a mistake, or something. But they just show them kissing and she's trying to resist but when "runs out of excuses" she just keeps on kissing him passionately and BAM! She wakes up naked in her bed. And the next day it's like nothing happened. She leaves her miserable job and goes back to her boyfriend with no problems. Oh, I forgot. Apparently you can have sex with anyone and nothing will happen to you. UGH! I hate what movies are doing these days. If you meet someone you like you just end up in bed with them. *shakes head* I don't think I'll ever get over that.

I guess I normally like movies that have some kind of point. This wasn't a terrible movie, but it definitely wasn't the best movie ever. It's a nice little flick, I suppose.
