Spiderman 3 WARNING - SPOILERS!
I really enjoyed this movie. To be honest, I was only going to rate it as "okay" until the end when they wrapped it all up with talking about how everyone has a dark side. I never really made the connection that it was showing everyone's dark side coming out and them overcoming it. (Maybe I'm just dumb.) It's a good thing they threw that in there for us stupid people. :) That really is a fascinating subject. Everyone has a dark side that I think comes out at least once in their life. Once you overcome it, you become stronger as a person. Or something. That was my attempt at being insightful. Anyhow, on to the movie itself...
To be honest, I was expecting more from Peter and MJ's relationship. At the beginning it seemed to be going well, but I didn't really feel it. Maybe if I had seen the first two movies before seeing the third one it would have seemed more realistic. Mary Jane never seemed to be into Peter like I imagined she would be. It was a cool scene when they were both laying on that web. I couldn't believe how bad Peter was screwing himself over when he was talking to MJ about him being Spiderman. "I don't know, I guess I've become something of an icon." Yeah, Peter. That's what MJ wants to hear right now. All about how you've become really successful and how everyone loves you. Peter got a little too wrapped up in himself in the beginning. It was proved through his stupid decision to tell Gwen to kiss him while he was hanging upside down. Umm, Peter? Don't you remember doing that to MJ back in the first Spiderman movie? I guess not. Actually, the first time that I saw the movie, I didn't realize that everyone was telling him to kiss Gwen. It just seemed like he decided to do it because he could. Then I thought he was really dumb. Now I realize he was just really caught up with himself. Though, I could see where Peter was coming from when MJ first came to him about her review. He was just trying to relate her problems to his own to empathize. He did go through issues with Spiderman at first with the press; he could sympathize with what she was going through. But, during dinner it went a little too far. Though, if I remember correctly, it doesn't seem like MJ was singing that badly in the play. Though I only saw that part once about a month ago, so it's very possible that my memory isn't quite right. It just doesn't seem like the reviews would push her out of Broadway like that. Though, I suppose I haven't exactly been on Broadway or know very much about it at all. But, I do know that it would be terrible if something like that happened to someone. I would feel pretty cravitzy. Though, in Peter's defense, MJ didn't exactly tell him that she was let go from the play. Though... she didn't really get that big of a chance. She wasn't going to tell him right before his little celebration. Their situation was just doomed to fail. How sad...
What is absolutely ridiculous is the Sandman. What the freaking cravitz? He just happened to fall into this hole right when some scientists were doing some crazy experiment where they turned something into sand. (or whatever that was) If it was that big of an experiment, you'd think that if they detected anything in the way that they would check it out. If it was a bird or something, then wouldn't they make a freak bird that can absorb sand and be a little sand monster? That wouldn't be very cool. It'd be like a Birds 2 movie, with mutated birds that can't die!! Agh! Whatever, I'll get over it. Every superhero movie has scenes and storylines like that. I do think that it would be really frustrating when he first was getting up out of his sand pile. The sand just kept falling off of him and he couldn't do anything! At first he couldn't pick up his daughter's necklace! How sad. But, somehow, he was able to pull himself together. (What a nice pun that was.) Something that I'm wondering is how exactly you kill the Sandman. Sure, you get him wet and he's immobilized for a moment, but he's not dead. Do you burn him and turn him into glass? It's just like those heroes that can turn into water... how do you kill water? You don't. It just changes forms. I don't really get it.
Now I'd have to go back and watch the first Spiderman movie, but it seemed to me that they just wrote into the script that Uncle Ben's killer was still out there to mix things up. It just made Peter that much more angry and another reason for him to get attached to the Venom. Though, it did mix things up and it did cause much more turmoil for Peter so that he would go for the Venom. So, maybe it's not that big of a deal.
The Venom. Oh man, that was awesome. I know some people hated seeing Peter all venomized because he was too "emo" and he looked like an idiot dancing. I loved it! I loved seeing Peter acting like he was so slick and cool. I know that if I was on the venom stuff or anything like it, I would do the same thing. I would think I was the coolest person on Earth and dance around like an idiot. That was awesome. Usually in these kind of situations, movies get their super-hot actors to just look really cool and people like it. I liked seeing dorkiness. Dorkiness is cool. I thought that the Venom idea was very cool. (Cool seems to be a favorite adjective of mine.) Peter's dark side got too much of a hold on him and came back to haunt him. When you decide to bring out your bad side, you have to deal with the consequences. Not only that, but his decision ended up killing Eddie and consuming him. Tsk Tsk, Peter. Now, I did like seeing Harry turn good. It's just too bad that he made that decision and then died. I guess there won't be any question for MJ on who to be with. One of your choices is now dead. Oops.
Now, speaking of Harry, I don't quite understand what his powers were. I know he did something to himself in his lab or whatever, but what exactly did he do? Did he give himself the ability to heal quickly, be supernaturally strong, and have quick reflexes? I don't really get it. Though, I did like seeing him smile. He looked like a nice guy. If I were MJ, I probably would have gone for him too. They had a nice time making that omelet and dancing around. I loved seeing Harry attempt to flip the omelet and fail. That was pretty funny -- and realistic. Awesome. Oh, another question. What exactly happened when he just disappeared in the restaurant? Can he teleport too? I don't know. I probably never will. Oh well.
Oh, something that I thought was hilarious was Stan Lee's cameo. When I saw the movie the first time, I didn't know that it was some special guy. It was just a stupid scene that made no sense. Then I heard later that it was a special cameo by Stan Lee, and guess what? It's still a stupid scene. If they are going to have a special appearance like that, I think they can do a better job of making it more discrete.
Overall, I loved the movie. Everyone has their dark sides and they have to learn to overcome it. Once you look past some
inconsistencies
(which seem to be in every movie/TV show ever made), it's a great movie.
