Superman Returns WARNING - SPOILERS!
Now, just as a sidenote, the only Superman knowledge I have is from watching Smallville and I've never seen any of the other Superman movies. So, keep that in mind during this movie thought.
Right after I saw this movie I wasn't sure what to think of it. I think I had to get to used to the differences between the movie and what they have on Smallville, and it was just a difference that I didn't like at first. But the more that I thought about the movie, the more I liked it. Once you get past the old complaint of how could people possibly be oblivious to the fact that Clark Kent could possibly be Superman (which it seems almost everyone has, I'm starting to) then it's a great movie! It has some pretty obvious parallels to the Christ story. Especially when Lex Luthor stabbed him in the side with the kryptonite shard. (that must have hurt) That kind of thing has been done so many times at first I just rolled my eyes and went on with it, but again, the more that I think about it I think it's great. He does act as a savior for the world and has superhuman abilities.
Though I was a little bothered by the scene where he is being hurt by Lex Luthor. (I know, I was just talking about this) I guess this goes back to what I expect from watching Smallville, but when he first landed down on the kryptonite island thing, I expected him to immediately realize that there was kryptonite there. I thought that instantly he would start acting hurt or something. I guess it was such a small amount he didn't really notice anything. That one bead of sweat must have been the first sign. I thought it was a bit overdramatic how they were beating him up and he falls into the ocean. Meh. Oh! And when he was admitted into the hospital he was out for a long time! I guess having kryptonite inside of him while he was exerting so much energy really drained him? He seemed to take longer than I thought to recover. But meh, I'll get over it.
It was a very interesting twist to have that kid (his name escapes me at the moment) to be Superman's son! Holy cravitz! I didn't think that at all at the beginning of the movie! It kind of bothered me as well since obviously that means that Superman had sex with Lois before he left outside the bonds of marriage. Now I know that he can't meet all of the expectations for a savior, but it seems like a sexual transgression like that is a little extreme. Though, I never did see any of the other Superman movies so I don't really know the circumstances at all. Maybe there's no way for them to get married. Oh well. I didn't know that Superman could even impregnate someone--apparently he can. *shrug* Clark on Smallville seems to be worried about that. If he just saw Superman Returns then he would see that it's okay! Goodness! :) I'm curious to see what other powers this kid has besides super-strength.
That brings up another point! (This seems to never end) I wasn't sure what to think in the scene where Lex is holding that refined kryptonite up to the kid's face. The kid looked scared, but I couldn't tell if he was supposed to be acting hurt or not. I was just confused. Apparently not since Lex didn't seem to suspect too much, I don't think. I wasn't sure if he really suspected the kid to be Superman's son or not. He found out soon enough when the kid decided to push a piano on one of his guys. I thought that was a great scene. He's having an asthma attack from seeing his mom in danger and decides to push this piano on the guy. Heh.
Anyhow, I think this wraps up this movie thought. Wow! I just kept rambling on and on... it was a long movie. Congrats to all who actually read through it all.
