Vote For the Worst...

As many people know who watch American Idol, there is a website that encourages people to vote for the "worst" contestant. "Worst" simply meaning they vote for the contestant they think most people hate the most and who they think Idol producers would hate to see win. When I first heard of the website (back in season 6 with Sanjaya), I was appalled. Vote for the worst? Why? Why not just let the best person win? Though, I have never really watched American Idol or voted or anything. Then I stumbled upon Josiah Leming's myspace. I had overheard someone say something about an amazing kid for this season. I still don't know who they were talking about, but I saw Josiah's myspace on someone's top friends, which at the time his profile picture was of his first audition for the AI judges. It caught my eye and I checked it out. He intrigued me. I watched and found more and more videos of him and was really impressed. His songs, all written by himself, had captivating lyrics and melodies. Awesome.

This rant really is about VFTW; I'm getting there. I honestly don't remember how I found out that he had registered at VFTW, but I did. I went to the website for the first time and started reading through the forum. I did what any good member of a forum should do and read through all of their rules. I quickly found out that it was drastically different than any other forum I've been a member of.

If you're new, you shouldn't make a thread. You can flame and make fun of anyone you want. (As long as it's in "good taste" and not "overly prejudiced.") No "fantarding," which the rules define as anything more than posting "one SHORT comment about how you like someone." From reading the forum rules, I got the feeling that this was a place that you could post whatever you want except comments in bad taste and "fantarding." I was wrong.

From what I've seen, you're only allowed to say anything at all in support of any contestant if you've been a member for a while or proved yourself to be able to make fun of someone severely. If you've achieved that status, then you can pretty much say whatever you want about a contestant and people are okay with it. None of this "one SHORT comment" business. Any new person who says anything nice about anyone, will be accused of "fantarding" and will be banned. Anyone who tries to defend anyone whose been made fun of, will also be accused of "fantarding" (somehow) and will be equivalent to crap. They often then look up anything about you and find a way to twist anything you've said or done to make you out to be a sick and terrible person. They especially love making fun of "fraus." These are the people who are fans of singers who are usually in their 30s or 40s and typically overweight. They enjoy constantly taunting their weight, and accusing them of abandoning their children and being horrible mothers for "fantarding" over anyone. Obviously, if you post a comment on a myspace page once a day, that takes up all your time to do anything else with your life.

They are very proud of the fact that many of Josiah's fans that used to post daily on his page have since stopped. What's hilarious to me is that both sides are doing the same thing. The "Bad News Babes" (many of the "fraus" that are fans of Josiah and the main target of VFTW's mockery) are fans of Josiah so they listen to his music and post on his myspace. Many "worsters" are fans of Josiah's and they just decide to use their time to make fun of the people that waste their time showing their support of Josiah. I can only imagine the time it took them to make a weebly site all about the BNBs. (That website then morphed into an even worse site, IdleTard.com, that simply makes fun of all fans who obsess over any idle contestant.) I'm not talking about the time it took to just make the website, but the time it took to find various BNB myspace profiles and copy their pictures and edit them in various ways. The time to make a blog that copies the comments that the BNBs make on Josiah's myspace and mock them. I realize not all the people on VFTW took the time to do that... but at least a couple people have contributed to those "photochops." It looks like both parties are wasting their time. Just one group is using it to support a singer, and one is using it to make fun of the people supporting the singer.

Yes, I realize some people go over the top with how they show they like someone. But, come on. That doesn't make them worthy of the mocking that VFTW gives them. First of all, the looks should have nothing to do with anything. Calling someone fat and ugly just gives me flashbacks to first grade.
