Smallville Ramblings

8.09 - Abyss

I don't think I've been this depressed from an episode since Hypnotic way back in season 5. You know, when Clark broke up with Lana. Seriously... I'm so sad. There's just so much that doesn't make sense if Chloe suddenly doesn't know Clark's secret! Though, on the up side, this episode did really get me thinking about a lot of things. What makes someone human? What really defines love and friendship? It really can be very deep. Then of course we wonder how the order of memories that were erased were chosen. Oh boy... this rambling should be interesting.

First of all, that's probably one of the saddest things that could happen to someone that you love. I think it's harder to see someone you care about not even recognize you or seem like a completely different person than to see them physically die. That's a pretty big thing to say, but I think to an extent there's some truth to it. That was basically Jimmy's worst nightmare. Chloe no longer recognized who he was and was just forgetting everything. She was basically turning into a freakin' robot and forgetting how to feel! Not mention that she forgot all about Jimmy before she forgot about Clark. Now, that could be because she was reminded of more memories of Jimmy and thought about him more so she forgot his memories quicker. I'll just go with that. Though, she did seem to fight harder when she was starting to forget about Clark than Jimmy. I'm not sure if that's really fair, though. She didn't seem to realize that Jimmy and the memory were disappearing the first time, but she did when Clark was disappearing. For us, it was the second time to see that happen, but I think we can agree that it wasn't the first time she experienced losing a memory at the beginning of the episode. Man, I just don't get it. Maybe it was just happening more frequently and she had so little memories left she was more conscious of what was going on. Or something.

At least this episode was full of wonderful Chlark moments. Aww, I still have that special place in my heart for Chlark. Though, it was more of a best friend love than anything else. Just losing his best friend. That picture in the yearbook that said "Best Buds" just made me want to cry. Awww... they've been through so much. Mostly involving things with his secret. Things that he hasn't had anyone else to share those feelings and experiences with. That's how their bond got so strong. He just took that away from Chloe without her consent. In fact, she told him that she wouldn't trade anything for knowing his secret and standing by his side. She was having an effect on the world. It's so hard, though. Clark does have a good reason to not tell her. He just loves her too much to see the pattern of people leaving/dying because of his secret that he didn't want that to happen to Chloe, too. That was the reason he didn't tell Lana for so long, too. In fact, this whole situation is reminding me a lot of Reckoning back in season 5. Chloe knows his secret (well, duh... she has for a while), and then she basically dies (mentally) and Clark goes to Jor-El to make everything better but ends up deciding that Chloe forget his secret the second time around. Just like Reckoning! Lana finds out his secret but dies shortly after so he gets Jor-El to bring him back in time so he can decide to not tell Lana his secret. It's all so tragic.

Brainiac just won't die! I'm wondering if Chloe still had some of Brainiac in her head... does Lana still have some Brainiac in her head, too? Does it really matter since she's nowhere to be found? Maybe. They did mention her name at the beginning of the episode as being invited to Chloe's wedding. Oh man!! Next week is the wedding! What if Lana just randomly decided to pop up and then it was all awkward between her and Clark and then she thinks that Chloe knows Clark's secret and ends up telling her somehow... oh the possibilities! That would certainly be a good way for Chloe to know Clark's secret again. Yes! It's a great plan! I wouldn't be able to stand it if Chloe had to go for more than a couple of episodes without knowing Clark's secret. I'm hoping she finds out next week, though that seems very unlikely. It would be awesome though. The last wedding episode turned out to be freakin' awesome and Lana ended up kind of learning Clark's secret. (minus the whole alien thing) So it only makes sense that Chloe would re-learn Clark's secret on her wedding day. Right? Of course! My logic never fails!

This certainly brings up the idea of what makes a computer different from a human. What made Chloe more computer-like was just memorizing the list of attributes of a person rather than actually associating feelings and specific memories with them. The emotions just weren't there when the person is facts off of a page. Very interesting indeed. It also makes me wonder what exactly she thought of Davis when he was the only person in her memory. Did she think she loved him? If I only had a memory of one person and that person was a male, I'm not sure what I would think. Davis was pretty creepy in Chloe's head, though. He was really confident and just... evil-looking. Wearing all black and just confidently taking over all of Chloe's thoughts. Ugh. I'm liking him less and less. Especially since he decided that it would be a good idea to ruin Chloe's life and bring up the fact that he has feelings for her and then go in for a kiss. A kiss that Chloe regrettably started to lean into, but luckily ended it quickly. It would've been nice if she had slapped him reminiscent to Lana slapping Lex back in Reckoning. Yes, that would've been a much better ending to an episode. I mean, what is he thinking? He knows that he's turning into something weird and has most likely just accepted the fact that he is the person who kills people when he blacks out. So he decides it would be a great idea to go after Chloe knowing what's going on with him? What a freakin' idiot!

I really hate that Davis was the only person she remembered, though. That just ruins things. Now that Chloe doesn't know Clark's secret she's going to also wonder why Davis was the only person she remembered and Davis seems to have accepted the idea that it means that they are meant for eachother. Arg! It'll only get Chloe thinking and maybe ruin her wedding day. If Clark had just kept her memory they could figure out he's going to end up killing them all. Or something. Instead, her life is going to be ruined. I just know it.

Now that we know that Brainiac was indeed inside of Chloe's head (literally) it might be possible that Chloe was the one who programmed the crystal (under Brainiac's control and then he erased the memory) and sent it to Clark to get him to the Phantom Zone. I don't know who else would've been able to reprogram the crystal other than Chloiac.

No Clois. So disappointing! I look forward to more wonderful Clois scenes every week, and Lois was absent the entire episode. Nothing. At least that means she's basically required to be in the next episode. I don't know see why she wouldn't with Chloe getting married. She'll be there... with Clark as her date. Yes, it's all so perfect! Then Lana can show up and sense the connection between Lois and Clark and get all jealous. It'll all work out so wonderfully. Maybe. Maybe Lana won't show up at all. It just seems like it'd add that extra spice.

Speaking of extra spice to an episode, I freakin' loved seeing the scene between young Chloe and Clark in 8th grade. We get to see the story we've all heard about Chloe kissing Clark and saying she just wanted to get it out of the way since she knows that he was thinking about it all day. So sweet! Though... I'll just try to ignore the fact that they were only supposed to be a year younger than they were in season 1. Yeah... they just didn't look like freshman at all in season 1. Oh well. That doesn't change the fact that the scene was so adorable to watch. Aww... Chlark. Such a cute couple. Awww, I loved the kiss that Clark gave Chloe in the fortress. That whole little talk was so touching, too! If only Clark wasn't dumb and decided that Chloe would be better off without knowing his secret. Arg!! It just makes no sense at all! Where did all those memories relating to his secret go? Is she now just missing some vital gaps of her life in her memory? Sad day! Like I said before, I'll just hope she gets them back soon.

So Brainiac is now infecting the fortress. What the heck. This is like the 3rd time it'll need to be rebuilt. You'd think that Jor-El/the fortress could have prevented it somehow. He was the one that took Brainiac out of Chloe in the first place. He should've known that it would do something like what it did. He should've just had a jar ready or something. No, now we have Brianiac BACK and he's going to ruin everything again. I'm just ready to get rid of him for good! We keep getting fake deaths. I want to really kill him! Or at least just have him die for real. We were so close last season.

Well, this ended up being fairly long. How fun. Let's help next week is not so depressing. On to Chloe and Jimmy's wedding! Yay!
