Smallville Ramblings

7.08 - Blue

What an odd episode. I overall liked it (when don't I?), and I liked seeing yet another "kryptonite flavor," though I seriously doubt we'll ever see it again. The only ones they ever feel like reusing is green (duh) and red. But, I'm fine with that.

So, at the beginning was Lana really visiting her Aunt Nell in Metropolis? Because the way Clark said it and his expression sure made it seem like some sort of cover up. Though, they never really showed it being false. I don't know. I now doubt it whenever Lana goes to see her Aunt Nell since it was a cover up at the beginning of the season. Not to mention we didn't even hear her name for about 2 or 3 seasons. (As far as I can remember, anyway.) Suddenly we get to hear her name every episode. Craziness, that is. What's also crazy is the lack of Jimmy. It seems like we are seeing less of him this season than we did last season, but this season he actually has a spot in the opening credits. Sad. Remember when I didn't want to see him because he was messing up any Chlark possibilities? Now I actually miss him.

Here's a question. Why didn't Zor-El pop up in the same place that Lara popped up? He was conveniently hidden behind some ice crystal so they wouldn't see him and he could see them. He could have moved there, Jephthah. Yes, yes. Very possible. But it's still strange that we didn't see him where Lara was placed. What if Zor-El showed up where Lara did and Lara showed up wherever Zor-El showed up? Clark would be so confused. I would be so confused. What was also confusing was the fact that Lara acted happier to see her niece Kara than her own son Kal-El. I know that she actually knew Kara as a person better, but... Clark is her friggin' son. Though, I loved it when Kara realized that Lara had to have come from her crystal. Then the camera goes over to Clark and he looks away like that will change the fact that he lied to her. Then he looks to his mother and informs her that she didn't come from a portal, but from Kara's crystal. (Exactly what Kara just told Lara.) Then, suddenly, Lara gets it. "Oh... so I came from Zor-El's crystal." You can definitely tell that she is Clark's mom.

So, this Zor-El guy. He's a little loopy in the head. First of all, obviously you aren't going to be a happy family since Lara obviously doesn't want to be with you and Clark hates you. You can't exactly force happiness upon people. "If I just grab her by the arm and threaten her son, then she'll love me forever!" It's like Lex. "If I just make Lana think she's pregnant and then lie to her, she'll marry me and we'll have a happy life." Well, it's not exactly like Lex. Lex's train of thought actually makes sense. Zor-El, on the other hand, is just completely insane. And why the heck is he wearing Neo's trenchcoat/cassock? It's just a more lame version of Neo's awesomeness. Eh, that's okay. (I don't know how or why it wouldn't be.) I'm getting off track.

When Clark first put on the blue ring, I really thought it was going to be something similar to red kryptonite. His eyes glowed all scary-like and then when his mom asked if he was okay his response was accompanied with a little smirk. But, alas, it just took away his powers. It turns out in the comic books blue kryptonite was completely different, too. (After reading through wikipedia.) Very interesting. Though, you would think that Clark could tell when he has powers and when he doesn't, before he tries to use them. Doesn't he feel weaker or something? I guess not, since he never has noticed in any episode that he loses his powers until he tries to use them or gets hurt. Silly Smallville.

Grant Gabriel is really Julian Luthor -- Lex's once-thought dead brother. They just keep spicing up that storyline. First, he's just a little brother that we know died when he was young and traumatized Lex. Then, we find out (or we think we find out) that Lex is the one who killed Julian. (on accident) Then we find out that it was Lex's mother who "killed" Julian so Lionel wouldn't raise another Lex. Now... I guess we're supposed to assume that she really just smothered Julian unconscious and not dead. So, Lionel knew this but decided to give Julian up for adoption without anyone knowing... because... "his wife was terminally ill." I guess he didn't want to make his wife think that she failed? I don't get it. But, regardless, it adds a twist to the storyline. Here I was thinking they introduced this new character that had no significant whatsoever. It turns out he's a vital part of the storyline. Obviously he and Lois didn't really break up, but it's clever that they've made everyone believe that they have. (Or rather, they "no longer share a toothbrush." Who says that?) But, they'll definitely have to be more careful now. They can't just go and make out in his office, and leave the door unlocked. (Dumb) Though, I'm really not feeling the connection they have. It feels like it's just a physical relationship at this point. "Wow, you're hot. Let's make out." *shakes head* Lois, just get with Clark and get it done with.

Did anyone else think it was hilarious when Lana got thrown against the elevator door? I mean, Clark just comes up to see what's up and oh look, Lana just got thrown at the door. And somehow that caused her mouth to start bleeding and for her to go unconscious. Nice try, Lana. We all knew that you could take on a Kryptonian. *shakes head* But, it's the effort that counts, right? I guess that's what Clark was trying to tell her later in the episode. "Look at everything you did for my mother." Yeah, she... spilled tea for her, talked to her, and then got thrown against an elevator door. Though, just as a random comment, I thought that the way that Clark said, "my mother" sounded eerily like Anakin Skywalker in episode 2 and 3. Not that it means anything or really matters. Though, something else about that scene. Lana really looked worried about herself and how she couldn't get back to being a good person. That shows me that she really does want to get better for Clark and would prefer getting better and being with Clark rather than just staying bad and being with Lex. It seems somewhat obvious, but the fact that she seemed to hate Lex more than she loved Clark really got me worried. Apparently it's got her worried too. Fight it, Lana! Follow what Lara told you! I thought that was hilarious, by the way. She just bluntly said to Lana, "You're worried I'll discover the darkness you're concealing. " Yeah, you are Lana. But, you can get better. You've got Superman as a boyfriend, after all.

What the heck happened to Kara? She just gets transported to Detroit with no memory? Dumb! What the heck?! Does she still have her powers? How are we going to find her again? Perhaps Clark got sent to Detroit with no memory like she did and they'll find each other. I'm not sure what that would do or how they would get back to Smallville, but it'd sure be interesting. No, I doubt that Clark got sent to Detroit exactly like Kara did. That would be very unoriginal and odd. I don't know. What else has Jor-El done to Clark when he didn't obey? He killed Lana, and then Jonathan when Clark went back in time, he started to kill Jonathan if Clark didn't go into Jor-El's little portal thing, he made Clark a Kryptonian robot (that could friggin' fly), and... oh I don't know. That's all I can think of. So, it would be lame if we got a repeat of any of those. I suppose we could get another Kal-El like we did in the beginning of season 4. But... how would we get out of it? Black kryptonite again? That would be lame. I don't know. Maybe he'll take Clark and make him wear red and blue tights with that cape that whats-her-name gave Clark in Action. Yes, Jephthah. That's a great idea. *shakes head* I don't know. I'm excited to find out, though.

I hope this writer's strike gets resolved soon so I can get a full explanation for all of my questions. At least they've got to resolve this Clarkness in the next episode. This series is centered around his life, after all. December 13th better come quick!
