Smallville Ramblings

9.04 - Echo

Clark reading people's minds! This was certainly a fun episode! Lois and Clark's relationship is moving along quite nicely, Oliver is feeling terrible about himself, we got to see the Toy Man again, and Clark learned a lesson. Maybe. Let's make a new paragraph, shall we?

My first question is why Clark could only read Lois's mind at first. Since Jor-El is the one responsible for the temporary ability, did he know that it would be most useful for Clark to know Lois's thoughts? If that's true then maybe Jor-El isn't so torn up about Clark going back to being "human" and spending time with Lois. He didn't seem too angry when Clark went back to talk to him. He simply explained how this was another test that was setup for whenever Clark makes a mistake. Now, it's hard to believe that it took this long for Clark to make an error in judgment... we all know how stupid he is. He makes mistakes all the time. I guess this is a fairly recent thing that Jor-El setup or something? All he said is it was a seed that was planted in Clark. When he was born? From the training? I can only assume it's from the recent training; that would make the most sense.

Though, something Jor-El told Clark bothers me a little bit: "Assumptions are beneath you." He needs to instead stick to his Kryptonian intuition. Hm. While assumptions are sometimes bad or lead to bad things, you need some assumptions sometimes! It's like judging. Of course you shouldn't judge people without knowing them first but you have to make some judgments. Like, when you see someone in a dark alley with a look in their eye and maybe alcohol in one hand... I don't think it'd be a bad assumption to avoid them. We live on assumptions and judgments! We just can't let it get out of hand or judge too soon or too harshly. It's a hard line to draw, yes, but I just don't like saying that assumptions are bad. Because they aren't.

Anyway, I guess what Jor-El was really trying to teach Clark was that he needed to understand humans more. I suppose hearing their thoughts for a couple of days would be helpful, but what about being raised by humans and living in a human society his entire life? Was that not enough? I guess not. I'm not sure how much Clark learned, either. I think he just had it confirmed that Lois really likes him and thinks he's handsome. Though, I have a feeling he might have already known that. Maybe.

I feel really bad for Oliver. Now it makes sense why he burned his Green Arrow stuff last episode. He is super depressed and thinks he's worthless and not worthy to be Green Arrow. He seems to think that he doesn't deserve his CEO position or his fortune. While there is truth to him inheriting money from his parents at a young age, he must be doing something right for the company to still be running (though it is doing worse now that he is... having issues) and for him to still have his fortune. If he really never worked he would be broke and that inherited fortune would have been long gone by now. Not to mention he is a hero (or was) that saved lives and put his life in danger for others. And he's pretty attractive. That helps as well. He's certainly not worthless!

Okay, so there were some AWESOME Clois moments in this episode! Clark actually asked Lois out on a date! I don't care what he says, it was definitely a date. It was so cute to see him so worried about her well being as well. When she was obviously distressed over missing the Blur and him not calling her and such, Clark was so concerned that he immediately got the maple donut she was craving. Despite it having a bite taken out of it... awkward. Then later when he realized that she really wanted to do something with Clark that night... or rather, that she didn't have anything else to do, he immediately asked her out. Without a second thought. Then even after Lois tried to deny the invitation, Clark continued to read her mind and do exactly what she wanted. He so obviously cares about her so much! It's adorable! It's so great that I don't really have to guess what they're thinking anymore. In fact, it was quite refreshing to know exactly what Lois was thinking this episode. One of my favorite moments in the episode was at the beginning when she said, "You should get your hearing checked... [hot stuff]." !!! I love it! I love it so much! I'm pretty sure I giggled with delight when I first heard that. Oh, it was such a promising episode to see Clark reading Lois's mind.

I'm glad that it was just a temporary ability to read minds. I was worried they were going to make it a permanent ability, but that doesn't really fit since most other Supermans can't read minds. Right? They hinted at it in the Superman movie with Christopher Reeve (kind of) but I don't think he ever actually could. So, I'm glad it was temporary. A fun temporary ability.

I would just like to throw out there that I think they will bring back Jimmy. It might just be that I recently had to relive his death in Doomsday and I'm really hopeful, but I think they should definitely bring him back somehow. They've done crazier things before! I can hope!

Well, this will do for this Smallville Rambling. I'm so excited to be catching up with Smallville again! It'd been a while and I had *gasp* forgotten about some plotlines! I didn't think that could ever be possible! But, I'm most definitely back into it all and I'll actually catch up. It's nice knowing that I won't have to wait for new episodes week by week. You should all be jealous. All of you. :) Until the next rambling!
