10.21 - Finale
The last Smallville episode ever! What a sad day. It feels so weird writing this rambling. There's no motivation to write it since there's no new episode waiting for me when I finish. Though, I'll write it anyway because it would be lame if I didn't, right? Right. This was an appropriate closing to a wonderful series. I felt a nice sense of completion when it finished... except for the fact that it doesn't look like Clark and Lois are married yet. What the heck? Why wait seven years? I guess they are kind of married, but just don't have the rings officially on yet? They haven't officially exchanged them? I don't know. At least we got a wonderful moment: "...yes, Miss Lane." "That's so hot." I love it so much! Let's move on to another paragraph.
It made me laugh when they showed the "previously on Smallville" bit at the beginning. They started from the freakin' Pilot. "Here's what's happened during the entire series if you happened to be watching this without any prior knowledge of Smallville." It did annoy me a little that the scenes they showed didn't go in order. They showed Clark and Lois sharing their first real kiss before it showed Clark announcing that he is working at the Daily Planet. I guess it doesn't matter too much. It just seems like that should go in order. At least they didn't include any scenes of Clark and Lana's relationship. That helped them cut out a huge chunk of the series. It's also a little irrelevent since nothing Clana related happened in the finale except for the scenes of Clark saving Lana when he had the major flashback of his life. I'll get to that later.
I knew that Lois wouldn't get away with calling off the wedding. That's just a silly thing to do to their relationship right before the series finale. I loved how confident Clark was at the beginning when Lois was being insistent on calling off the wedding. "You're not in my way, Lois. You're by my side... and if you really want to go through with cancelling the wedding, you're going to have to leave me standing at the alter." Way to go, Clark! Way to fight for her! What a sweet thing to say, too. "You're by my side." You don't get in my way, you stand by me and help me with whatever I need. We're equals. So great! That's the way it should be in a marriage! One of my favorite moments in the episode was when Lois read Clark's vows and looked up with tears in her eyes and said, "I'm such an idiot." OF COURSE YOU WERE! I'm pretty sure I said something along those lines when I first saw the episode. We all knew you were an idiot for leaving freakin' Superman last episode. I'm just glad that she articulated that fact so nicely.
I was happy to see that Clark and Lois's decision to sell the farm was not what Martha had in mind. I would be pretty upset if I were her. Why didn't they consult Martha before just selling the home that he was raised in? That seems like one of those decisions that should involve your mom, especially when it was her home that she graciously gave to you. But, she's a better person than I am, and decided to go off to Clark about not leaving the past behind. I guess that was the real issue, anyway. "If you turn your back on all the experiences that made you strong and compassionate because they hurt, I'm afraid that one day everything you learned in Smallville will have been for nothing." "I'm never gonna let that happen." "You already are and you don't see it! Sweetheart, all I'm saying is you don't have to let go of the past to move on." Then Clark, in his glorious stupidity, ignored his mom's wonderful advice and immediately advised her. "Yes you do mom, I'm sorry. I love you, but you have to find a way to put all this behind you just like I did. It's the only way to move on." I'm right and you're wrong! Of course you have to put these things behind you! You're only my mother, and I'm obviously smarter than you. Ugh. At least he came to his senses by the end of the episode.
I'm glad that Clark's stupidity didn't last too long. Lois convinced him quickly enough by giving him her vows. The ceremony itself was so beautiful. I definitely cried when Clark walked Lois down the aisle. It really hit me hard when Clark looked over and saw his dad standing next to his mom. Smallville! Goodness! To see Clark finally happy with someone he's destined to be with, and then to look over and see his two happy parents watching him... it was just too much. His dad and mom are very aware of him and his current life, and they are so proud and happy for him. The person he had pushed away into his past showed up right when he opened himself up to it. It doesn't quite make sense that his dad could just pop up whenever it seemed appropriate, but it was so touching when he would pop up that I didn't care. I'm also glad that Clark has Chloe to notice that the ring was gold kryptonite, and consequently save the world. Way to go, Chloe! Wahoo! Speaking of Chloe's awesomeness--they put her back in the credits for the finale! YAY! I don't know why they thought it would make sense to put her in the credits in the middle and very last episode of season 10 and not just all of season 10, or to just keep her in the credits from the middle to the end... but I'm happy she made it back in the credits for the finale. It just makes sense to have good ol' Chloe in the finale opening credits. She deserves it, gosh darnit!
As glad as I am that Clark was able to suck the darkness out of Oliver and the rest of humanity, I don't know how he did it. Sure, Clark is "good at the impossible," but couldn't we get a little better explanation than that? "Clark is a good person and therefore is the only one that can take the darkness out of people." What about Lois? She's the person that made Clark the pure and wonderful person that he is. Wouldn't that make Lois more capable than Clark in that regard? Just because he has super powers, when he is good, then he's super-good and can therefore zap darkness? I don't know. I think it's supposed to show how far Clark has come. He's so awesome now that he can overcome nearly the entire world's darkness. Sure. He has come a long way. I mean, his stupidity has decreased exponentially in the past couple seasons. Ever since Lana left, actually. Hm.
Clark finally has another fantastic conversation with Jonathan, and then his dad tells him that Clark can no longer depend on them for help but to look to Jor-El for help. What? Why? How has Clark relied on you in the past 4 seasons anyway? You died, Jonathan. Why completely cut out his parents? Why can't Clark look to them and Jor-El for guidance occasionally? What's wrong with that? I guess Jonathan was just telling Clark that he should really go to Jor-El for help. He just wanted to see Clark in his superman garb. That tricky guy. I must admit, I cried when Martha came up and they all had a group family hug. It was just so sweet to see all of these old characters that mean so much to Clark come back!
Speaking of old characters that mean something to Clark, I was disappointed that Lana didn't ever show her face. I was sure that we would have seen her at least once. Well, besides the memories that popped up here and there. I so wanted her to come and hang out in the back of Clark and Lois's wedding. She would have stood there with a genuine smile on her face with a hint of jealousy. Clark would have looked back at her with a genuine smile with a hint of smugness. It would have been perfect. I'll just imagine the non-existent scene in my mind. That'll appease me.
I was pretty terrified for Tess when Lionel informed her that her heart was going to be cut out and given to Lex. Yikes. What a way to die. "My heart was ripped out and given to Superman's nemesis: Lex Luthor." Luckily, Tess is awesome and was able to break free and shoot Lionel. It's about time. He didn't belong in this world, anyway. He's just a killable character, apparently. Both of his living kids in this world decided to murder him. What a wonderful accomplishment, Lionel. Way to be evil and produce evil children. Too bad he sold his soul for Lex's life. Which, what does that mean? How do you sell your soul? Is he now burning in hell because he sold his soul to the... devil? Is Darkseid the devil? It sure sounds scary, but I have no idea what it's supposed to mean.
Lex finally came back! The real Lex! I have no idea why the "perfect" cloned body parts that were mashed together included a mutilated hand, though. He just couldn't quite get how to clone a perfect right hand? Too difficult? Did the writes just make a lame excuse for why Lex wears a glove on his right hand? Yes, I think that's it. I really hope there's some extra features on the season 10 box set that include the making of this episode. At least some bloopers that include Michael Rosenbaum with Tom Welling again and him with Cassidy Freeman. She's the one that replaced him, after all. I thought it was kind of funny that Lex just suddenly obviously knew that Tess was his sister this whole time. Tess surely wasn't some character they came up with to replace Lex. No, she was a significant character that Lex has known about all this time. I'm over it, though. I really liked Tess's character. They did a good job of coming up with someone who could fill Lex's place without being a Lex clone. Not to mention Cassidy Freeman did a great job. Aww... it makes me sad to talk about this in past tense. Smallville surely can't be over. Oh, come on, Jephthah. It's good for you not to obsess over a TV show. Yes... I know.
It was a little unexpected when Lex decided to stab his sister. "I love you, sis..." *STAB* Not the best way to show your love, Lex. Usually flowers, dinner, or sharing some of your company is a good way to show affection. Not stabbing people. He believed that he was doing her a favor so she wouldn't end up like him. No, no, no... he just killed her because there was no place for her in the Superman stories that we all know when Clark becomes Superman. At least Tess got her revenge and erased all of Lex's memory. That actually made me really sad... and a little confused. Shouldn't Lex have just collapsed on the floor and lost his ability to speak or do anything when he lost his memory? Didn't he forget how to speak, walk, eat... I never get it. How does your memory choose what to forget? If Lex lost his memory then wouldn't he have a chance of being a good person since he wasn't raised by Lionel anymore? Maybe the fact that he has Lionel's heart and was brought back to life because of Darkseid has something to do with his evilness in the future. That's too bad. He could have been like Tess and worked for the good guys. It makes me really sad to see Clark and Lex's friendship suddenly non-existent. All those years when they actually were friends were just gone. All three of his wives are now forgotten. A fake pregnancy... gone. Clark's secret... gone. That's probably the real reason they decided to wipe his memory. Lex Luthor isn't supposed to know that Clark Kent is really Superman. It was like they said, "Oops... Lex can't know Clark's secret. Let's make him forget somehow." "Well, Tess isn't supposed to be in the Superman story anyway, so how about Lex will kill her and then she'll get her revenge by putting magical black stuff on his face that will make him lose his memory?" "Where did it come from?" "When have we dealt with memories before? Oh, Summerholt." "Got it. Glad we're done with that dilemma." Perhaps I go a little overboard with these fake conversations. It really was sad to see a flashback of Lex's life and know that it was all disappearing. Everything we know about this Lex is suddenly gone. Sad!
This kind of thing happens all the time in movies and TV shows, but it cracks me up every time. When Clark suddenly got this picture of Tess's attackers and he had a blurry picture of the car. He just selects the section with the license plate to "zoom in" and suddenly all this detail appears in the picture. It's incredible! Not only was it a "zoom in" feature, but it was a "create detail" feature! Digital pictures only have so many pixels... and when you zoom in it won't make those any clearer. In fact, it will only make the pixels bigger and thus more pixelated. You can't create detail in a picture. Silly, Smallville. Though, this is one of the least silly things you've done. So many other awesome shows and movies have done the same thing, so I'll overlook it.
Lois is awesome. I just love her character so much. I'm going to miss her witty and sarcastic remarks, her ways of teaching Clark lessons, and her way of making really corny/cheesy lines actually sound believable. The prime example from the finale was when she knocked out the reporter who was going to see the president. "I'm sorry. I wouldn't have had to do that if the world wasn't in jeopardy... and you weren't such a b****." You wanted her to say something like that and knew she was thinking it, and then she just let it slip out. Oh, Lois! No wonder Clark loves you so much!
As happy as I was that Clark finally wore the Superman suit, I noticed that we never saw Tom Welling in the full outfit. We just saw him with the top on, and a CGI version of him with the full outfit. I still think that it looks a little weird with him wearing the suit. His other outfit looked fine. It actually matched the style of the other superheroes in Justice League. But, we know that he has to look like the Superman we all know and love. He even flew! Goodness, finally! It makes perfect sense that he would learn how to fly as he became Superman. It was touching to have him have a flashback of his "trials" (AKA the past 10 seasons of Smallville), but it felt like a long time to have a flashback of scenes. Though, I must admit that when I watched the episode for the second time I enjoyed it a lot more. It was fun to see Clark reminiscing with me on a great run of Smallville. The first time I was watching it I just couldn't believe how much of my precious new episode Smallville time was being taken by things I've already seen before. I just wanted to see Clark and Lois finally exchange rings and officially be married. But, I digress. It was a good way to sum things up for Clark. Though, when he flew into Darkseid the flying still looked a little awkward. Couldn't that have looked a little more realistic? I also would have loved to see him just randomly do flying things like Dean Cain would do sometimes in Lois and Clark. You know, like when he's doing his chores around the house, or needs to reach something, etc... but, I know. There's only so much time in the episode.
The ending of the episode was perfect! We finally saw Jimmy! Sure, it's his younger brother that is awkwardly going by his older brothers name and looks exactly the same, but it was nice to see his face again. I wonder if that made it weird at all for Chloe to see his brother grow up to look exactly like her dead husband. Anyway, I was so excited to see him. It was nice to see that Lex is now president, and that Perry White was the editor of the Daily Planet. Things just locked into place so nicely! Then to top it all off, they ended the series with John William's Superman theme that we all know and love. It must have cost a fortune for them to play it, but we all loved it so much.
I thought it was hilarious when Clark was in the fortress realizing his destiny and whatnot, and then Jor-El is sure to say, "I ask you to remember one thing: your abilities may be of my blood, but it is your time in Smallville with Jonathan and Martha Kent and all the people there that made you a hero, Kal-El." Then Jonathan appears and adds, "Always hold onto Smallville." Okay, CW. I get it. I won't ever forget the show Smallville whenever I see or hear anything Superman. I'll always hold onto it and buy whatever has Smallville on it. Was I the only one who thought that? Yeah, yeah... it was supposed to show how Clark didn't shove everything in his past and how Smallville is what shaped him into who he became, but I couldn't help but think of what the show's producers were thinking. "Always hold onto Smallville." I would have laughed if I were Jon Schneider having to read that line. "Really? You really want me to say that while holding the superman suit?" It's okay, though. I will always hold onto Smallville. I forever remember it's corniness, silliness, and... awesomeness. When you comb through some of the ridiculousness, the show had so many great moments that I'll never forget. Thank you, Smallville.
