6.12 - Labyrinth
This episode can be summed up in one word: incredible. I, yet again, loved this episode! The past 3 episodes have all been so great, it seems like I'm just saying that out of habit. But... I mean it. Okay, enough about the brilliance that is "Labyrinth." It all started out and my first thought was, "Whoa! Shelby! Where have you been this season?" Shelby just wanders around Smallville and only comes to the Kent farm whenever she wants Clark's company. Heh, just kidding. I just thought it was funny. But when the opening credits first went and Clark is in a freaking mental hospital and everyone is telling him about his secret and he suddenly has no powers... I was clueless. What's going on? That phrase was going through my mind basically throughout the entire episode. Yeah, even at the end when Clark and Lana were talking. There's so much to say!
I'll get the not-as-important stuff out of the way first. Well, not quite first since I already talked a bit about the episode, but whatever. There was no Lois or Justice League at all in this episode. I wanted to see how Lois was holding up! But, I can't complain. That always happens. They never resolve what I want resolved the episode right after something significant happened. Like last episode there was no Lana whatsoever! Anyhow, I just wanted to see if Lois was a mess and how the Justice League was holding up. You know, and then I could see a possible Clois start popping up again. Whatever. I'll get over it. This episode did get to touch on both Chlark and Clana, in good ways, so that's awesome. Oh, and hardly any Martha in this episode...
I guess that leads me into how bizarre Clark's alternate reality was. He walks in and Lana has her whole life devoted to Clark, and apparently it's been like that since Kindergarten. You could see how happy Clark was to see Lana hug him and be happy to see him. All of those old feelings started to pop back up again. Aww, Clark. Oh, and Lana mentioned Nell yet again. I think the writers miss Nell or something because this makes two episodes in a row that she's been mentioned. All of the new viewers are like, "Who's Nell?" Anyhow, I'm blabbering about unimportant nonsense. I guess that's what a ramble is, right? Right. So, when Lana first mentioned Martha being at the Luthor mansion... I immediately was scared that she had gone off and married Lionel. NOO! Then, of course, like they always do, they confirm my worst fear. Lionel is married to Martha and they living happily in the mansion while she's convinced Clark is crazy. The look on Clark's face was great. "How could you?" That's what I'd say, but I'd probably slap her across the face too. No, I'm being too harsh. Lionel actually can be pretty nice sometimes. Especially to Martha, since he's got his eye on her. But he is protecting Clark's secret faithfully. I don't know about him... he seems to be a combination of the "good" Lionel back in season 4, and the "bad" Lionel we all know and love.
Something else I thought about... Clark must be able to run pretty fast, even without powers, or the mental institution must be really close to everything in Smallville. It seemed like Clark ran to his barn in no time. Though, he did seem a little out of breath and was sweating. He had a lot of adrenaline, or something. He was just running, and punching people. He's probably still strong for a human. Anyhow, that's not what I wanted to say. When Clark first got in Chloe's car I got all excited! Maybe this is the episode where he realizes his love for Chloe and they finally hook up! Oh... no. He just realizes that he cares a lot about Chloe and that he still loves Lana. I'll get to Lana in another paragraph. I don't understand why he didn't go with Chloe up there in the Talon. She was the only one who knew what was going on and trusted that Clark wasn't crazy! (or so it seemed) I think Chloe was being a bit of an idiot. When Clark was forced to choose between her and Lana, he never said anything that confirmed anything! He just stood there and started to make a face at Chloe and she flipped out. It reminded me from when she was back in high school and flipped out everything Clark did anything in favor of Lana. I guess that's what they were going for. Aww... but it was really sad to see Chloe die in Clark's arms! I think that's when he realized how much he cared about her. That would be devastating to lose your best friend like that. Poor Clark. :(
Lex needs a paragraph. Holy cravitz, Lex! On the Phantom Zone forums, there were some people that talked about how interesting it would be if Clark didn't save Lex on that bridge. And then Lex started going on about what really happened on the bridge and I was freaking out! At first I thought that maybe this episode all went back to that moment and that changed Clark's entire life. But, then that didn't make complete sense because Lana said she was never with Whitney, and she was in the Pilot. So, I dismissed it. Seeing Lex without any legs was shocking! At first, I had made the batteries pop out of the remote because I was freaking out about him starting to talk about the bridge. So, I looked down to pick up the batteries and fix it, and my mom (who had already seen it, I watched it recorded) was telling me to rewind it because I missed something important. Oh boy did I miss something important. We went back and BAM! Lex is in a wheelchair with no legs! Incredible. Clark's face was priceless. At least there was no indication that he and Lana were together. It was like a demented paradise for Clark. Well, actually, everything was really screwed up except for Lana. And he almost accepted that life all for Lana...
Okay, the time has come to talk about Lana. You know, I didn't find it too shocking to hear Clark saying that he was still in love with Lana. Uh... I think we all know that. When you freak out about her going off and being with Lex, and then being engaged and pregnant... well, Clark. You kind of gave away your feelings in your expressions. Though, the significant thing was that he acknowledged it. He never seemed to really doubt it, not like a defining moment, but he did seem to be trying to distance himself from Lana. I never doubted he had fallen out of love with her. No, I take that back. I think there were times that I questioned his true feelings for her. Eh, whatever. The important thing is that he knows it now. And another thing about that is that you could see Chloe's face when Clark told her he still loved Lana. Obviously, she still cares about Clark a lot. Again, not that I really doubted her caring about Clark, but her love for him throughout all of high school seemed to morph into a strong bond of friendship with him instead. She seemed to have gotten over it. Though, she seemed genuinely hurt when Clark told her that. I think she still secretly wanted to be with Clark and still loves him. Though, Clark was really sweet when he told Chloe how much he meant to her. I'm sure that must have given Chloe the warm fuzzies. It would sure make me happy to hear that from someone. (especially Tom Welling) Although it made me mad to see Clark not want to tell Chloe who she really was in his world. He should have told her that she died and he was devastated! He didn't have to include the part about her being crazy. I guess he did say that she was the only one who trusted him. I guess that shows he feels he can tell Chloe anything. Aww, she really is his closest friend.
That ending scene was very... interesting. It was nice to see Clark and Lana have a normal conversation without too much tension. If Lex didn't show up at the end, it could have been a really pleasant moment. I'm glad Clark told her his "dream." I guess it was a dream. I suppose that was Clark's way of telling Lana he still cared about her and wants him to marry her instead of Lex. That last look she gave Clark confirmed to me that she thought the same way. It all goes back to Hydro! She would prefer to marry Clark over Lex! I know it! She said that "when Clark and I were together I would have said yes without hesitating." Well, I think if somehow you reunited with Clark now, you would say yes without too much hesitation. You could see it in her face that she was almost disappointed to see her fiance show up. She's got to feel that something isn't right with the whole situation. She's got to! I hope I see more civilized conversations between her and Clark in future. I always talk about Chloe and Lois being with Clark, but I've always had a soft spot for Clark and Lana. I definitely wouldn't be upset if they reunited somehow. Although, I can think of a lot of people that would be since their relationship seems to never end. It just makes it that much more exciting.
Well, I think this concludes this rambling. A fantastic episode. I hope next week follows this awesome episode trend!
