8.01 - Odyssey
We're into the final Smallville season! Here we go! We certainly have changed dramatically from the first season. No Lana, no Martha, no Jonathan, no Lex, no Lionel... what the heck as happened to the show? All we have left is Chloe and Clark. Oh, and Lois. Can't forget good ol' Lois. Overall, I was pleased with this episode. Some weird moments... which I'll ramble about sufficiently. Off we go!
First off, incredibly lame way to solve the whole "the world is going to end with Clark being under control by Lex" thing. Apparently Jor-El's way of putting Clark under control of someone else is by taking away Clark's powers. Which would seem rather tragic and unsolvable, except for the fact that Clark has gone without powers numerous times before and always found a way to get them back. We all knew he was going to get them back, probably by the end of the episode. What do you know... he did. And rather than be surprised and happy to see that he's fine, I was just disappointed that he was healed again in an anti-climatic sort of way. How was he healed? He was just flown up to the sun and it healed him... somehow. We'll ignore the fact that he was supposedly human and that the sun should have... oh, I don't know... burned him to death? I guess he was still Kryptonian at heart... or something lame like that. Honestly.
What else was blatantly obvious and nonsensical? Oh yes... apparently Oliver's idea of "doing whatever it takes to find Lex" is by shooting Clark and killing him. What. The. Heck. Clark was his last chance to find out where Lex was. Shooting him was not going to help him find Lex in the least. It was actually going to lessen his chances more than ever of finding Lex. Doesn't make any sense at all to me. The best way would be to act normal so Clark wouldn't notice and try to casually ask him again or try to trick him into telling him. Not freakin' shooting him with an arrow! Not to mention the whole mind control thing worked for a lot longer than Chloe's did. Chloe's wasn't very long at all. Oh, but I forget. Clark had to be near death somehow so that he could have an excuse to get his powers back. Umm... it seems like Mr. Martian Oreo Man could have done that when Clark was in the snow about to die before he was taken on that boat. Which... what the heck? How did he go from snow to a boat? Something to do with Lex?
*sighs* Okay, now that I've sufficiently gotten those out of the way. Let's talk about Chloe's character a bit. So, she's apparently this super genius girl now. And yet... she can't heal anymore. My hypothesis: when Brainiac took her over, he somehow drained her healing power and replaced it with his extreme wit. That would also explain why he dumbly got himself killed by Clark. Seriously... no excuse for him to let that happen. It must be that he gave all his smarts to Chloe.
Aww... Chloe. Jimmy. So cute! They are seriously going to get married?? That's insanely awesome! One, because that just leaves Lois for Clark with Lana out of the picture, and Two because they are just too cute. Isn't it funny how I was so opposed to their relationship at first? I've so switched sides. I'm officially a Clois fan now. That's the relationship that's bound to last, right? Or something?
Speaking of Lois...umm... Daily Planet. Clark now has a job there! Wow! We knew it had to happen. Why did he decide to do that? Is it all part of the "new life" thing? Which, is so lame! "I've decided that all these people that I love and care about don't really matter anymore. They all said goodbye to me with no problem, I should just do the same." *snap* Done! Yeah, it's so that easy Clark. I guess that was the only way he was going to become the Superman that we all know and love. They had to leave him. Which, if you think about it... what else is he going to do with all those people out of his life? No Lex to ruin his plans, no parents to talk to, no girlfriend to... hang out with. He could just bail hay on the farm, finish his education (Psh... yeah, right), or he could become a Superhero with a double identity. Yeah, I'd definitely go with choice number 3. It's kind of what everyone expects him to do and all that jazz. I'm just wondering if he's really going to put on the whole Superman outfit by the end of the season. Or whip out that cape what's-her-name gave him last season. That's probably gone. Sad day. I liked that cape.
Okay, back to the Daily Planet job thing. I'm thinking he got the job there because he was really realizing his love for Lois. I'm telling you, it's going to be awesome. The opening credits, they decided to include all these Clois shots. What did they do last season? Tons of Clana stuff. It was Clananess everywhere. It's bound to be Cloisness everywhere. Whose excited?? I'm totally pumped. Though... who hired him? Who owns the Daily Planet? Ms. Harvard-Random-Girl? Perhaps. Clark is a nobody to her. Little does she know he was the Traveler! Sucker! I guess it's just easier to get into the Daily Planet than we all thought. It was such a big deal for Chloe. She had to write that article about Vampires to get in... and barely made it. Clark just decides to apply and gets a job? But not only does he get a job, he isn't in the basement. He somehow worked his way right next to Lois. I don't get it at all. Well, how could Clark Kent not get a job as a reporter? Yeah... that doesn't happen. Exactly. It had to happen. It just would've been nice if they had a nice explanation with it.
So who is this mystery guy in the credits? We didn't even get an introduction... at least I don't think we did. It probably says it somewhere in the articles and interviews that I try to avoid so I don't get any spoilers. I like just finding out on my own. So, I will do just that! Fun fun everywhere!
Martian Oreo Man... we've never found out anything about why he leaves Oreo's in his tracks. Just thought I'd throw that in now that he doesn't seem like he'll be an important character anymore.
Aww... I just remembered. When Clark was dying and he saw Lana and his parents. How freakin' sweet. I really want them back. Just for an episode or something. I loved how they threw in a scene of Lana from the freakin' Pilot. So sweet! He remembered that moment from his freshman year in high school and saw it in his last moments. That is... aww, it makes me sad. That's what it does. Stupid Lana. Just hold her friggin' hand once more... Clois. Clois. It's okay. Clark will be alright. CLOIS! Yes.
Random note: Aquaman jumping out of the ice at the beginning equaled awesome. That was cool.
Okay, the last scene when the Justice League that we saw at the beginning met up and then they were walking away and the camera panned out from Clark, I totally thought he was just going to jump off and fly away. How awesome would that have been? Pretty awesome. But, no. He just walked off. I'm sure he'll be flying by the end of the season. Let's look forward to that! I'm thinking he'll need Kara to get the hang of it or be pushed to learn. Aw... Kara. Stuck in the Phantom Zone Kara. Oh noes!! Kara AKA Laura Vandervoort wasn't in the opening credits!! I surely, surely, honestly, really hope that they didn't just decide to kick her off the show and leave her character plot as her being trapped in the freakin' Phantom Zone. What. The. Heck. That would be so dumb. Well, I remember back in season 4 they didn't have Chloe AKA Allison Mack in the opening credits either... one can only hope. I do not see why they would introduce her season 7, and then decide to just drop her character in the last season. Some sort of explanation and them even attempting to justify her non-existence and nobody caring. Something. Please. Ahhh!!
*takes a deep breath* We'll see, I guess. Let the anticipation build for the second episode of the last season!
