Smallville Ramblings

8.13 - Power

I was very angry and upset at this episode when it first ended. I was watching it online for the first time with headphones on and when it first ended with this Clark and Lana make out scene on top of the Daily Planet with absolutely no mention of Lois anywhere, I furiously took off my head phones and threw them on my bed. Very. Upset. But, after calming down and re-watching this scene and some other parts of this episode, I've grown to like it more and more and to actually like the last scene. Why? Oh, it's a fun journey in my head. Get ready for a fun ride.

So it appears that this person that Lana was in contact with was this Dr. Groll character. The person that Lana threatened back in season 6 when she was turning evil and the same person that knows about the "box" and about a lot of Lex's secrets. Though, it makes me wonder what Lana was doing when she met Oliver. Was that the lab that they were using and they knew that Green Arrow was onto them, and so they set it up for Oliver to find to make it look like Lex set it up? Lana said herself, "I'm not convinced that Lex is alive." All of these hints we got that Lex is alive and doing all of these underhanded things has really been Lana making it look like Lex. Well, except of course for the scene when we actually see Lex. Or rather, we see a bald man connected to some things watching a video that we presume to be Lex. I'm sure it was him. Wait... then there's this other guy that apparently Lex has been working with that Tess decided to kick to a bloody pulp. What's his name? IMDB claims it to be Regan. He claims to be talking to Lex and knows quite a bit. I think I'm convinced Lex actually was. Regan knew about Lex watching Tess's every move. Was I the only one that thought of Tess's sex scene with Oliver when Regan said he caught her highlights? Ugh, still such a terrible thought.

I like that Tess seems to be turning into a "good" person. She was really looking out for Lana (despite willing to sacrifice her at the end) and was telling Clark everything. She didn't even freak out when Clark admitted, "I knew Lex was alive... " Clark was no where near willing to admit that to Tess back in Bloodline when she found his footprint in the Arctic. It's so much like Lex and Clark. Well... sort of. It's kind of like they are friends now. Working together to solve a problem/mystery. She actually is reminding me of Lionel when he was trying to be good. He does things with good intentions, but doesn't seem to know how to get things done without using his evil powers. Tess was acting like she was still all powerful and evil, but she really didn't have much meat to backup what she was saying. When she was in the car with Regan her threat was simply, "Give me the Prometheus technology, or I'll take it by force." Yeah... I'm scared, Tess. I would probably be more scared if I didn't already know she was becoming good. Though, it is kind of worrisome that she decided to kick Regan to a bloody pulp. That scene doesn't quite make sense to me. First of all, when she hit him with the trophy, the cut was on the other side of his face, and I'm not sure how kicking him would cause blood to spatter on the window and on her face. That's some serious kicking. Maybe if she hit his jugular vein and it was like spurting out. Ugh... that's pretty gross. I guess that way we got the effect of Tess having blood on her face and everything. It was quite dramatic. She's not completely good... but trying. She's just so angry with Lex. She's like Lana was last season, I suppose.

I really don't get Lana right now. She really seems to be good and just wanting to be like Clark and everything. It's very worrisome that she has obviously craved that power she had back in Wrath ever since she had it. I'd be worried just like Clark is worried. It has never ended well when humans get superpowers. Supposedly Lana has prepared herself this time and it'll all be okay... but we all know it won't be. She's not in the credits! She's been here for so long! It's time for her to either die or be shot down by Clark proclaiming his love for Lois over Lana. Oh boy... I'll get more into that later. I am glad that Lana seems to have gotten away from her whole revenge on Lex thing. Not only that but she is helping Tess through it all. Tess is just angry and upset about everything (who wouldn't be?) and really wanted him dead. I really liked what Lana told her, "Every second that you are consumed by hate is another second Lex is still in control of you. Don't be a victim anymore." That is unbelievably good advice, Lana. She really does seem to have her act together. Maybe that'll help Tess steer clear of the revenge path and turn out to be a good person. That would be so refreshing and nice.

Lana... she seems to know what she's doing and what she wants in life, but there's something that's bothering me about her. I really admire her courage and determination to make an impact on the world using her newfound powers... but she can make an impact without powers. Who decided that she was the human who would take the responsibility of powers? She pretty much annointed herself as a God among men. Yes, it's with good intentions, but having that much power is just too tempting. Being with Clark would surely help, but I just having a really hard time seeing that it'll work out as nicely as she sees. Clark is showing the same worries. Then I have to remember back in Legion that these people from the future weren't worried about Lana. What's-her-name wasn't worried at all about what Lana had in store. They knew that she would accomplish a lot and be known for her impact on the world. Maybe this won't go sour. Ugh. Oh man... I just remembered the funniest line of this whole episode. So, we finally see what Lana has been up to at the Isis Foundation and we see this whole conversation Lana has with Dr. Groll about using her as the guinea pig of this new suit and everything. After seeing all of it, Clark's one comment is, "Lana doesn't want to destroy the technology, she wants to use it on herself." Good one, Clark. I wouldn't have known what the whole thing was about if you hadn't stated the obvious. How is Chloe supposed to react to something like that? "Uhh... Clark. I'm glad you were paying attention. You don't have to insult my intelligence by telling me." I guess he was just in so much shock by her decision, that he just felt compelled to say it out loud. I could kind of almost see that.

Okay, on to this whole fake break-up tape and Clana stuff. I don't know what to think of this fake tape. Did they tell her everything to say or did they just say something along the lines of, "Break up with Clark for good and tell him to not come looking for you." That seems more likely. I don't think that they knew Clark's secret, so I don't think they could tell Lana to say, "I need you, but the world needs you more." I think she was speaking the truth just then. Which, I guess we already knew. She basically told Clark that at the end of this episode. She knew that Clark cared a lot about her and she didn't want to be a distraction from his destiny. I guess her solution to that was to get superpowers so that they could be superheroes together. I guess it makes sense in some way. Clark doesn't seem to buy it.

Let's move on to this whole Clark business. Let's get inside of Clark's head. I know, it's a rather painful experience. I'll try not to lower your intelligence by getting inside of it. I absolutely loved the beginning scene with Clark and Chloe. I didn't really like the fact that Clark was re-watching the break up video again... but I think I like the reasons why. He decided to go to the Talon and kiss Lana. (Which, how did that scene end? "Well, that was nice. See you tomorrow." "See ya!") After coming back to the farm, he was obviously thinking how big of a mistake it was. He told that to Chloe. "We kind of kissed... I know, it was a mistake! I don't know what I was thinking!" Chloe didn't react at all to make Clark react that way. Now, the real question is why Clark thought it was a mistake in the first place. He went off about how he was doing something with his life after Lana left, but Chloe pointed out that it probably wasn't Lana leaving that made him do that. (I somewhat beg to differ, but it's still very possible.) I think that was Clark's best excuse he could think of. Honestly, he can't stop thinking about Lois. Or maybe, he just doesn't feel quite right with Lana because he knows that he's really falling for somebody else. Face it, Clark. Lana is weird. She went and decided to give herself powers. Your relationship is just different with her. You and Lois have a good time and make each other smile. You tease each other constantly and it makes you both happy. I never see that happen with Lana. Granted, because of the teasing neither of them want to admit their feelings for each other. Though, it sure seems like they did when they almost kissed in Bride. Ugh!

On to a new paragraph. So, it was a mistake to kiss Lana. He doesn't want to dig up feelings that need to stay buried. He didn't have a problem with leaning in for a kiss with Lois or asking her to dance. He feels like Lana is holding him back. Lois is only encouraging him to be the man he is. Well, I suppose one could argue Lana is doing a better job at that... but she is a distraction. I don't know how Clark could say that. "You're not a distraction. You never were." Yeah. Right. She so is. What did you do when Lana was in a coma? You stayed by her side all night instead of looking for Brainiac. She is stopping you from fulfilling your destiny. I'm not happy with Chloe that she just completely ignored the whole Lois issue when she talked to Clark. She might have been hinting towards it when she was commenting on the fact that Clark was acting like he committed a crime for kissing Lana. Maybe. I'm probably making that up to make me think that they really did mention Lois in this episode, though. I blame Chloe for convincing Clark to think that Lana isn't the reason that he decided to get off the farm and do something with his life. Clark was so convinced. He's angry to get back together with her. Honestly.

Okay, let's take a look at this last scene. Like I said, I utterly hated this scene. It was hard enough to see them make out at the end of last episode, but then they did it again on top of the Daily Planet for a longer period of time. Though, watching the scene Clark never actually seems to really want Lana. Jephthah, seriously. They made out vigorously. While this is true, I don't think Clark would refuse to make out with Lana. I do think he still has feelings for her... they never seem to go away. But he never smiled and just showed reluctance to be with Lana. Even when he said, "It's a dream, Lana." He shortly after added, "But we both know that dreams don't normally come true." He's not expecting this work out. Something is holding him back. SOMETHING. That something has to be LOIS! He can't just ignore the fact that they almost kissed in Bride! He can't! I am sick and tired of Lois not being around. I really miss her a lot, and I'm sure Clark does too. He has to. If she's not back next episode... I'll probably find something else to analyze that brings her into everything. This show isn't about Clark... it's all about Lois! Yeah! *cough* Maybe.

So basically, I came to realize that this last scene is not one to be angry about because Clark didn't really show any want for Lana. He was reluctant the entire time! Lana is going to die! She has to! Okay... maybe not. I've never wanted her to die so much before, though. It would just add the perfect twist to everything. Well, maybe not perfect. She's just gotta go. I'm looking forward to it. I can't stand to see Lois all hurt and Clark not comfortable with who he is with. Seriously, this whole Clana thing has to go. We want Clois! Clois! Clois! CLOIS!!

Let's hope Clois is all we get next episode.
